Mother's Day is a time to really dig in and show our appreciation to mom. We often hear stories or read posts about how someone's mom taught them everything they needed to know about X,Y, and Z and how they are a better person because of their mom.
Charleston, South Carolina-based reporter/ blogger and mother Shana Swain offers a different perspective on who teaches whom in her latest Huffington Post piece. In My Daughters, My Teachers, Swain shares 10 examples of her daughters schooling her in life. SHARE WITH ZURI VOICES In your motherhood journey, what have you learned from your offspring?
“Maybe I need to start wearing my hair in its natural state to show her it’s okay to wear your hair the way God gave it you,” she added.
In 2009, those actions soon lead to the creation of Columbia Curly Girls Meetup Group. The small band of naturalists met in restaurants to share and network with other Naturals. In 2010 the group began coordinating larger meetups and Expos to support the growing natural community in the Carolinas. After their third expo, the group took a hiatus. Saturday, May 13th, the Carolina Natural Hair Expo returns to the St Andrews Park on Beatty Road in Columbia. The event will feature natural hair and beauty solutions and education; special health screenings; breast cancer awareness; exercising techniques; weight loss and healthy eating information; and vendors. LISTEN BELOW: Big things Are On the Horizon! Carolina Natural Hair Expo founder shares with Zuri Voices what the group is working on next. A scroll through Facebook revealed that a good friend had transitioned to a better life. Sabrina Brown was, I'm sure, one of the nicest people to walk the face of God's earth. Both Charles and I met her in College and enjoyed being able to call her friend.
When we relocated to South Carolina a few years ago, Sabrina was willing to help us establish our brand in the Columbia market. She came over for dinner, we had a mini photo shoot, she entertained ALL of Caleb's "4-year old" questions (he had a buddy that night) and shared our marketing efforts with her enormous network of family, friends, colleagues. Excited to be back in the same town, we made plans to catch lunch. I'm sad to say, we didn't get the chance. But I am very happy to say we knew her, and will sincerely miss her! Rest in God's everlasting love and peace, our Zuri friend, Sabrina Brown. -Charles, Thelisha & Caleb.
