“We’re always putting weave in and straightening it and not wearing it in our natural state.”

“Maybe I need to start wearing my hair in its natural state to show her it’s okay to wear your hair the way God gave it you,” she added.

In 2009, those actions soon lead to the creation of Columbia Curly Girls Meetup Group. The small band of naturalists met in restaurants to share and network with other Naturals.
In 2010 the group began coordinating larger meetups and Expos to support the growing natural community in the Carolinas. After their third expo, the group took a hiatus.

Saturday, May 13th, the Carolina Natural Hair Expo returns to the St Andrews Park on Beatty Road in Columbia. The event will feature natural hair and beauty solutions and education; special health screenings; breast cancer awareness; exercising techniques; weight loss and healthy eating information; and vendors.
